Product Description

DIN 1.2738 P20+Ni Plastic Mould Steel Plate is a premium-quality pre-hardened plastic mould steel developed for manufacturing large plastic injection moulds, mould bases, die holders, and engineering tooling components. The addition of nickel provides superior toughness, improved through-hardness, and excellent mechanical properties, making it an ideal material for medium and large mould applications.

Supplied in a pre-hardened condition with a typical hardness of 280–320 HB, this steel can be machined directly without additional hardening in most applications. This reduces production time, minimizes distortion, and improves machining efficiency.

The carefully balanced alloy composition of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and manganese offers excellent wear resistance, good polishability, outstanding dimensional stability, and enhanced toughness throughout large cross-sections. These characteristics ensure reliable performance and long service life in demanding mould manufacturing operations.

DIN 1.2738, also known as P20 HH or AISI P20+Ni, is vacuum degassed and refined to provide improved cleanliness, consistent hardness, and excellent machining performance. It is widely used in plastic mould manufacturing, die making, automotive tooling, and precision engineering industries.

Stress Relieving

After extensive machining, stress relieving is recommended by heating the material to approximately 480–500°C, holding for one hour per 25 mm of thickness, and allowing it to cool slowly in air. This process helps minimize internal stresses and improves dimensional stability.

Heat Treatment

Forging

Forge the steel between 1095°C and 900°C. Avoid forging below 870°C to maintain the material’s mechanical properties.

Preheating

As DIN 1.2738 is supplied in a pre-hardened condition, additional hardening is generally not required before machining.

Nitriding

The steel is highly suitable for nitriding to increase surface hardness, wear resistance, and mould life without affecting the core toughness.

Processing

DIN 1.2738 P20+Ni Tool Steel is available as steel plates, round bars, flat bars, forged blocks, and precision-machined components. Materials can be supplied in standard or custom sizes with close machining tolerances according to customer drawings and project requirements.
