Product Overview
2316 Steel Round Bar is a premium-grade mold steel containing approximately 16% Chromium and 1% Molybdenum, delivering superior corrosion resistance properties. The strategic addition of chromium and molybdenum enhances the material’s ability to withstand aggressive environments, making it ideal for demanding plastic moulding applications.
Specific sulfur additions have been carefully considered to improve machinability characteristics, allowing for faster production cycles and reduced tool wear during fabrication processes.
Important Characteristics
This grade is not designed for highly polished or etched surface finishes. It is specifically engineered for applications where enhanced machinability and corrosion resistance are prioritized over mirror-like surface aesthetics.
Microstructure & Heat Treatment Condition
2316 Steel in the quenched and tempered condition exhibits a predominantly bainite-martensite microstructure, ensuring excellent mechanical properties and dimensional stability. The material is available in the prehardened condition, offered at hardness levels of either 339 HB or 399 HB to suit various application requirements.
Heat Treatment Guide for 2316 Steel Round
Annealing Process
For optimal annealing results, heat the material to 811 – 831°C. After the annealing cycle, the maximum achievable hardness is 236 HB.
Stress Relieving
To relieve internal stresses, soak the material at 600 – 652°C, followed by furnace cooling. This process helps maintain dimensional stability and prevents distortion during subsequent machining operations.
Hardening Process
For achieving maximum hardness, heat the steel to 1020 – 1039°C, followed by oil quenching at 500 – 555°C. After quenching, the material attains a hardness range of 48 – 54 HRC, providing excellent wear resistance and durability for demanding applications.
